The New South Institute (NSI) has welcomed the passing of the Public Service Amendment Bill, and called it an enormous achievement in the governance framework in South Africa.

On Tuesday, the National Assembly at its hybrid plenary sitting approved the bill, marking a significant step forward in the professionalisation and modernisation of the public service.

South Africa passes the  Public Service Amendment Bill

The African Union Development Agency-NEPAD's African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation Programme is marking a significant milestone this week with its first Continental Dossier Assessment Plenary.

The programme is piloting a new medicine evaluation process to ensure that medicines reaching the African people are of the highest quality.

In collaboration with the Good Manufacturing Practices Technical Committee over 100 dossier assessors from across Africa are gathering in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa for the first continental dossier plenary session.

NEPAD pilots new medicine evaluation process

The Botswana Ministry of Minerals has placed before parliament its proposal for a new legislation that allow locals to purchase a 24 percent stake from mining companies.

The draft bill indicates that this mandate will apply if the government opts not to exercise its right to acquire the same shareholding.

Furthermore, the proposal aims to amend the current Mines and Minerals Act, which permits the Botswana government to acquire a 15 percent interest in mining projects upon licensing.

To further make sense of all this and unpack what this means for the people of Botswana and its government, Peter Ndoro spoke to Botswana's Sunday Standard Newspaper Business Editor, Victor Baatweng.

This according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The data was concluded from a sample of about 5,000 young women and girls in South Africa and Uganda.

Last year, a report by UNICEF revealed that young women and girls are more than twice as likely to contract HIV than young men and boys.
