On this International Day of Democracy, new research suggests that support for democracy is weakening in parts of Africa. An Afrobarometer survey covering 38 countries finds that while 64 percent of Africans still prefer democracy, only 36 percent meet the study's definition of "committed democrats" - meaning they both prefer democracy and reject authoritarian alternatives. The research also finds that fewer than half of those surveyed consider their country a democracy, while just 38 percent are satisfied with the way democracy is working. The Church has played a central role in Ethiopia's political, cultural and religious life for more than 1,600 years. But its historical links to political power, as well as its association with particular ethnic identities, have become increasingly contentious. Police in South Africa have launched an investigation after bodies of five women were discovered in the East of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province in the past two months. The latest body was found yesterday, the police have deployed a multidisciplinary task team and advised women to avoid exercising or walking alone in isolated areas. While authorities have not ruled out a serial killer, they are also checking whether separate perpetrators or "copycat" killers are responsible. No one has been arrested.
