New outbreaks of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and recent Marburg virus cases in Uganda are once again highlighting the importance of global health security. During the COVID-19 pandemic, African institutions led one of the continent's largest public health responses, strengthening vaccine delivery, disease surveillance and regional cooperation. As new health threats emerge, the question is how those investments are shaping Africa's ability to respond today.
