South Africa's seventh parliament is due to be sworn in after the country's apex court dismissed a bid by former President Jacob Zuma's party, the MK, to stop the assembly's first sitting.  This parliament with elect the Speaker, the deputy speaker and the country's president. The governing African National Congress for the first time since 1994 - when the late Nelson Mandela ushered the country into democracy, failed to get enough votes to govern alone, so the party proposed a Government of National Unity...forcing them to look for coalition partners. The ANC got about 40% of the vote, with the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) on 22%, the MK party on 15% and the radical Economic Freedom Fighters on 9%. The African National Congress announced that five parties have now signed the Statement of Intent to participate in the Government of National unity. The 4 other parties are the Democratic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, GOOD, and the Patriotic Alliance. This collective represents 273 seats in the National Assembly or 68% of the seats in the National Assembly. Following May's election, the ANC was forced to forge alliances with other political parties after failing to win a parliamentary majority for the first since the 1994 election. Hours after the burial of Malawi's vice president Saulos Chilima who died in a plane crash a week ago - President Lazarus Chakwera is being urged to appoint a replacement  to avoid creating a vacuum.

Malawi's President urged to appoint new vice president

After the ANC failed to achieve majority votes in the country's recent elections, ANC President annouced that the party was seeking to form a government of national unity with a broad group of opposition parties. Last week, an eleventh-hour agreement weached, following negotiations that went late into the night. This led to the formation of South Africa's first-ever multi party coalition government with President Cyril Ramaphosa at its head.

These events were reminiscent of what took place in the country in 1994,  when, South Africa transitioned from apartheid rule to democratic government.

Meanwhile, a group of political parties in South Africa - including the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) -  calling themselves the Progressive Caucus is opposed to the Government of National Unity in its current form.

To reflect on these two historic moments in the country is Mr Roelf Meyer - Former politician and conflict resolution advisor. Roelf Meyer was part of those who negotiated SA's first transition from apartheid to democracy with President Cyril Ramaphosa, at the time he served as as chief negotiator for the National Party government....
