Malawi marks 62nd Independence Day with prayers amid economic hardship and austerity

View descriptionShare

Today, Malawi marks 62 years of independence, but unlike previous years, there are no state-funded celebrations. Instead, the government has dedicated the day to national prayers and reflection as part of austerity measures aimed at supporting economic recovery amid mounting economic challenges. The decision has sparked debate over the country's priorities and the state of its economy, while some religious groups have welcomed the move as a responsible use of public resources. To help us unpack the significance of today's Independence Day and what it says about Malawi's political and economic outlook, Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Malawi-based political scientist and Governance expert, Dr George Chaima.
