Makhanda Youth Declaration Calls for Renewed Focus on Africa's Unfinished Decolonial Project

South Africa has formally taken over the chairpersonship of the Southern African Development Community, SADC, at the regional bloc's 46th summit in Durban. Accepting the role, President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa was taking on the responsibility with humility and a strong sense of duty.He said the country remained grateful to its neighbours, whose support and solidarity contributed to South Africa's struggle for liberation from apartheid.The summit is focusing on ways to promote sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through infrastructure development, agriculture and the processing of critical minerals.  Channel Africa's Michael Mbewe reports.

The United Nations says humanitarian workers are facing growing levels of violence, with hundreds killed, injured or kidnapped each year. As the world marks World Humanitarian Day today, this year’s campaign is highlighting the families of aid workers who have lost their lives, and the dangers facing those delivering assistance in conflict zones.

Across Africa, young people are increasingly demanding a greater role in shaping policies that affect their lives and their futures. Our guest is Munashe Cuthbert Masiyiwa, Founder and Executive Director of the Youth Accountability Initiative in Zimbabwe, a youth-led organisation focused on public finance accountability, natural resource governance, climate action and development financing. A data scientist, economist and governance advocate, he is also one of the finalists for the 2026 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize.
