The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) has requested the United Nations to issue an "Urgent Appeal" to the South African government requesting immediate precautionary measures to protect migrant workers who according to the league are facing discriminatory violence in South Africa. The submission was made to the Special Procedures Working Group on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas.  The league says the request establishes that discrimination based on nationality is unabated and continuing.  According to the league the Submission lays out how South Africa is violating its obligations under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants (UNDROP) and requests that the country fulfil these obligations.Tsepiso Mkwetla spoke to General Coordinator of Kenyan Peasants League David Otieno….

Kenyan Peasants League Urges UN to Protect Migrant Workers in South Africa

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation soon on the killing of women in the country. Ramaphosa made the committment during his address at an official National Haritage celebration in the Western Cape province yesterday. He said, in the coming days he would provide update on the government's response to gender based violence against women and give progress report on the investigations on the murder of ten women whos bodies were discovered over the two months period. Nine of the bodies were found in various spots in the Ekurhuleni, east of the Johanesburg region and one was found in a river in the Soweto township south of the Johannesburg in the Gauteng province. Police have arrested three people and though they say they are not ruling out a possibility of a serial killer - the cases are being investigated independently. A year ago government classified gender based violence and femicide a National Disaster...To discuss this further, we spoke to Lisa Vetten, Research associate of Southern Centre for Inequality Studies at Wits University in South Africa

It's time now for the Friday edition of The Discourse, a daily feature here on Rise and Shine, where we sink our teeth a little deeper into an issue. This morning, we're asking what Africa can learn from China's economic transformation over the past five decades. Mao Zedong, who founded the People's Republic of China, died in 1976. His death was followed by major economic reforms, particularly under Deng Xiaoping, which helped move the country from a largely rural economy to one of the world's largest. But can lessons from that transformation be applied to Africa today? That question is explored in a recent opinion piece by Dr Richard Ikiebe, a Nigerian media and management consultant, teacher and chairperson of the board of BusinessDay newspaper. He spoke to us from the UK this morning

South Africa has marked Heritage Day with a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at planting ten million trees. Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts led the initiative, which took place across all nine provinces as part of President Cyril Ramaphosa's Presidential One Billion Trees Programme. The campaign is intended to promote environmental awareness and strengthen the country's resilience to climate change.  Swarts was joined by members of the diplomatic corps at Freedom Park in the capital, Pretoria. Channel Africa's Michael Mbewe reports
