Digital finance seeks to bridge Africa’s mobile connectivity and banking access gap

Across Africa, more people are using mobile phones and digital services to send, receive and spend money. But high mobile connectivity does not always mean people have access to formal financial services. In Botswana, mobile connections exceed the size of the population, yet many adults remain outside the banking system. There's now a growing focus on digital wallets and payments as a way of reaching people who remain underserved. So, what is driving this gap, and can digital services help close it? We spoke to Nompendulo Shongwe, Senior Market Developer at Mukuru, a financial services company.
