Africa Roundup: Key African and global developments shaping the day ahead

South Africa's economy has taken a knock. According to Statistics South Africa, the GDP decreased by 0,2% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the first quarter of this year. This is said to be due to mounting pressure on the country's goods producing sectors, with manufacturing, mining and electricity production all recording declines, as steep fuel price increases and weak consumer demand weighed on activity. While agriculture and parts of the services sector provided some support, it was not enough to keep the economy from declining. Innocent Semosa reports

Across Africa, more people are using mobile phones and digital services to send, receive and spend money. But high mobile connectivity does not always mean people have access to formal financial services. In Botswana, mobile connections exceed the size of the population, yet many adults remain outside the banking system. There's now a growing focus on digital wallets and payments as a way of reaching people who remain underserved. So, what is driving this gap, and can digital services help close it? We spoke to Nompendulo Shongwe, Senior Market Developer at Mukuru, a financial services company.
