ArcelorMittal South Africa has announced plans to shut down its Long Steel Business, potentially affecting around 3 500 jobs across its Newcastle Works, Vereeniging Works, and AMRAS rail and structures subsidiary.
The decision is attributed to persistent challenges in the local and global steel markets. Steel production is set to halt by late January 2025, with operations fully winding down by the end of the first quarter.
Channel Africa business reporter Innocent Semosa has the details.
