Africa’s Travel Indaba Drives Tourism Partnerships and Growth Opportunities Across the Continent

Rising tensions in the Middle East are beginning to ripple far beyond the region — with growing consequences for food production and food security in Africa. In South Africa, farmers are warning that higher global oil prices, coupled with climate pressures and a worsening outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, are sharply driving up the cost of farming inputs such as fuel and fertiliser. Speaking at the NAMPO Harvest Day — one of Africa’s biggest agricultural exhibitions — Standard Bank’s Head of Agribusiness, Brendan Jacobs, says the geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran are adding further strain to an already vulnerable agricultural sector. Meanwhile, the government says efforts to contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease are being intensified through a major vaccination drive. Nothando Magudulela reports.​

Middle East Tensions and Disease Outbreaks Threaten South Africa’s Food Security and Farming Costs

South Africa's African National Congress, the largest party in the country's coalition Government of National Unity, has rallied behind President Cyril Ramaphosa amid renewed scrutiny over the Phala Phala scandal. Speaking ahead of a special meeting of the ANC's top leadership in Cape Town, Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said any decision on Ramaphosa's future would rest with the party, insisting no one would remove the president unless the ANC agreed. The meeting was called after South Africa's Constitutional Court overturned Parliament's rejection of a report into the theft of more than half-a-million US dollars from President Ramaphosa's private farm in 2020. The president did not attend the gathering. Ntebo Mokobo reports
