African wildlife filmmakers are meeting for the 8th Nature, Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers Congress in the city of Durban in South Africa.

The summit is discussing challenges faced by the wildlife filmmakers in the continent including financial support, and just how Africans can tell the story of wildlife Africa and own the content.

Joining Asanda Beda to discuss this further is Pragna Parsotam Kok, South African storyteller, film and television Producer and serves as the co-founder and executive director of Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers.

8th Nature Filmmakers Congress addresses challenges in wildlife filmmaking

Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States - Ecowas. The 46-year-old was elected during the regional bloc's summit in Sierra Leone, taking over from President Julius Maada Bio. Faye assumes the role at a pivotal moment for West Africa, when the region is facing growing security threats. Recently Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger withdrew from the bloc, raising democratic setbacks in West Africa.

Violence is surging in Haiti, where armed gangs have tightened their grip on the country. The United Nations says rival groups are fighting for territory and resources, possibly in anticipation of more robust operations by the newly established UN-backed Gang Suppression Force. Much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, remains under gang control, with killings, sexual violence and kidnappings continuing to drive people from their homes. More than one and a half million Haitians have been displaced. William O'Neill, the UN Designated Expert on Human Rights in Haiti, has been following developments closely. He spoke to UN News's Daniel Dickinson and began by explaining what's behind the latest escalation in violence
