Zambia in rare funeral dispute over late former President Edgar Lungu’s burial location

View descriptionShare

Zambia is facing a rare and emotional standoff between the government and the family of its late former president, Edgar Lungu.

After initially agreeing to a state funeral in Lusaka, the family has now decided to bury him in South Africa, a move that has shocked many and sparked public debate.

President Hakainde Hichilema says Lungu belongs to the nation and should be buried on home soil with full honours. But the late leader's family insists the burial will be a private affair in Johannesburg, citing broken agreements and a desire for dignity.

Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to our Lusaka correspondent, Arthur Davies Sikopo
