Today, Tanzania marks Mwalimu Nyerere Day, commemorating the life and legacy of the country's founding President, Julius Kambarage Nyerere. Known affectionately as Mwalimu, or "Teacher", Nyerere helped lead Tanganyika to independence and later became the first president of the united Tanzania.
His legacy encompasses national unity, education, self-reliance and Pan-Africanism, but his economic philosophy of Ujamaa also remains an important subject of debate.
To reflect on Nyerere's legacy and its relevance to Tanzania today, Mpho Sithole spoke to Tanzanian political analyst Bubelwa Kaiza.
