View descriptionShare

Over the past week, Malawi has been grappling with the devastating aftermath of torrential rains and flash floods,  that swept across the country between March 15 and 19. According to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, the death toll has tragically risen to 34, with nearly 140,000 people affected across 18 councils. While the immediate storm has passed, the nation now faces a critical 'mop-up' and recovery phase, with thousands of families still displaced in emergency camps and vital infrastructure lying in ruins. For more on what is happening on the ground, Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Wilson Moleni, Malawi's Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs.
