Concerns raised over military airstrike in northwest Nigeria

View descriptionShare

Amnesty International has raised serious concerns over a deadly military airstrike in northwest Nigeria's Zamfara state, where at least 100 civilians were reportedly killed in a crowded market.

The organisation is calling for an urgent, independent investigation, saying the strike is part of a worrying pattern of civilian casualties linked to military operations in northern Nigeria. While the Nigerian military maintains that its operations are intelligence-led and aimed at armed groups, rights organisations say repeated incidents in recent months are raising urgent questions about the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

Mpho Sithole spoke to Executive Director Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi to unpack these concerns.
