The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Africa has raised alarm over what it describes as a deepening crisis of statelessness in South Sudan, warning that the denial of citizenship and legal identity is stripping individuals of fundamental rights at a pivotal political moment. At the centre of the concern is South Sudanese human rights defender and former lawmaker, Animu Risasi Amitai, whose citizenship was revoked in 2018 without due process. Despite a ruling in her favour by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, her nationality has yet to be restored. Authorities in Nigeria say they have arrested a 33-member gang linked to a deadly November 18 attack on a church in Kwara State, where 38 worshippers were abducted. According to police spokesperson Anthony Okon Placid, the suspects were apprehended through coordinated raids across Kwara and neighbouring Kogi State, as part of a broader nationwide crackdown on violent crime. The group is also believed to be responsible for a string of kidnappings, cattle rustling, and armed robberies—highlighting the persistent and evolving security challenges facing the country. The Families whose loved ones died more than a decade ago after being moved from a registered Life Esidimeni hospital have welcomed the decision by the South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority( NPA) to prosecute those responsible for the deaths of the 141 patients. In 2024, a judge ruled that former head of the Gauteng Provincial Health Department, Qedani Mahlangu and Mental Health Director Dr Makgabo Manamela can be held criminally liable for some of the deaths...Sisi Segalo has more on the story

 Life Esidimeni victims families welcome decision to prosecute those responsible for death of 141 patients

South Africa and Germany have reaffirmed their long-standing strategic partnership following the 12th Meeting of the German-South African Bi-National Commission held in Berlin. The meeting comes at a symbolic time, coinciding with South Africa's 32 years as a democratic nation and 37 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. South Africa's Minister of International Relatiosn and Coperation Ronald Lamola and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul led discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation, as well as addressing peace and security challenges in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. Channel Africa's reporter Micheal Mbewe filed this report.
