Words of Affirmation

How can you speak words of affirmation to your spouse when it doesn't come naturally to you? If you grew up not hearing words of affirmation, it'll be difficult to speak them to others. The key is discovering and learning to speak their love language.

A listener, writes Gary. How do I give words of affirmation to my spouse when it doesn't come naturally?

Well, you know, when we don't speak a language by nature it is more difficult. If you did not receive affirming words growing up, it probably will be more difficult for you to speak those words. You have to learn to speak another language. I suggest you write down some statements that maybe you've heard other people say, or maybe you've thought, but never said. Write them down. Stand in front of the mirror. Read them out loud to yourself until you feel comfortable saying those things. Then walk into the room where your spouse is and just say one of them. And if you have to run, you can run. But at least you broke the silence and now the second time will be easier. The third time will be easier. You have to practice learning a new language.
