Residents in Durban’s Berea say weekend nightlife has become a serious problem, with excessive noise, traffic, overcrowding, litter and partygoers spilling into the surrounding residential streets.

One resident, who has lived in the area for more than 15 years, says the disruption has become so bad that she is now considering selling her home and leaving the area.

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher is also demanding answers over what residents describe as a lack of Metro Police enforcement and response when they report problems. But it raises a bigger question: If you live in an area that becomes a popular nightlife hotspot, how much disruption should you be expected to tolerate?
