Recent property market data shows that more women are purchasing homes than men in South Africa, whether on their own or jointly as buyers. In fact, women now own a larger share of residential properties than men do, and single women are buying homes at nearly twice the rate of single men. So, what’s behind this shift?

On the surface, there’s a few real-world trends at play: economic independence, changing family dynamics, and women prioritising long-term security through property. With more women in the workforce, longer life expectancies, and nearly half of marriages ending in divorce, owning a home has become a form of financial empowerment and futureproofing rather than just a “couple’s thing.”
