In South Africa, many young people don’t realise that serious legal consequences can start very early. Under the Child Justice Act, children can be arrested from the age of 12 if they commit a crime.
From 12 to 14, the state can still charge a child if it can prove they understood the difference between right and wrong. From 14 to 18, they can be fully prosecuted under criminal law.
