Australia has stunned the world with a world‑first decree: starting 10 December 2025, Australian children under 16 will be banned from having YouTube accounts joining Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and X under sweeping social media legislation. The government justified the measure after research found that nearly four in ten Australian kids reported experiencing their most recent online harm on. Platforms face fines up to AU$49.5 million for failing to keep under‑16s out.
