Dear Ted and Amy,
We’re currently planning a vacation with my in-laws in August, and by “planning,” I mean they have planned it. It started innocently enough—“Let’s all take a trip together!”—which sounded fun in theory. But now, weeks before we leave, every day has a schedule, and every schedule has a backup schedule in case the first schedule doesn’t reach its full potential. There are planned meal times, activity blocks, and something labeled “flex time,” which I’m almost certain is just a cleverly disguised additional activity. Meanwhile, I’m over here thinking a vacation plan is, “We’ll figure it out when we get there,” maybe with a loose commitment to finding snacks at some point. To be fair, it’s coming from a good place. They’re excited. They want everyone to have a great time. I’m just worried that half-way through the week, I will lose whatever patience I packed. How should I handle this if it just gets too much?
