Two young Australian women are on life support in Thailand after suffering suspected methanol poisoning at a hostel in Laos. Family members are making a mercy dash to be by their side their trip of a lifetime turning to disaster.

For more, Melina Sarris reports.

The group of Melbourne girls set off on a whirl wind trip through Southeast Asia. Two of them are now fighting for life in hospital. It's believed they drank cocktails laced with methanol at a backpacker's hostel. The teenagers had visited Lao, which is where they fell ill. One girl is on life support in Udon Tani in northern Thailand. Her family has flown from Melbourne to be with her. Another girl is in a coma in a Bangkok hospital.

They can very quickly start having symptoms like nauseaa, vomiting, abdominal pain. After that it can start affecting their brain, so you can become comatose. It can cause blindness temporary or even permanent, and it can kill you.

Liquor is spiked with methanol to increase its potency. It's usually used in insecticide, paintstripper, and glass cleaner. It's unlikely the girls knew they were ingesting the toxic subst Ten others are sick, and there are unconfirmed reports two other people have died.

Early recognition of this is important and early treatment by specialist hospitals is the way that we can save these people's lives.

It's understood the poisoning happened late last week. The Department of Foreign Affairs is supporting the families
