PODCAST: The Daily Review for Fri. October 2nd, 2026

If you’ve been waiting forever to ride the train to Orleans, you’ll sadly have to wait a little bit longer. The signs to Trim Station may be up, but it’s looking highly unlikely that the train will run all the way there by the end of 2026. And then, we got an update on the LRT East Extension this afternoon. Once again, it’s another delay, and this one is being caused by software issues. The City of Ottawa says the pre-trial running period, originally scheduled for sometime this month, cannot take place until November. Hitachi, the subcontractor that handles this, says it has to update its software before the system can proceed further – work that requires ‘re-programming’. River Ward councillor Riley Brockington, who works on Ottawa’s Transit Committee, has already been acclaimed for the next term of council. He joins Kristy Cameron in Hour 3. Then, we turn things over to the mighty CFRA Nation. Are you frustrated by this development, or are you relieved that this regime is doing everything they can to get this done correctly? Text into the show or call in live!

Hour 3 of Ottawa Now for Fri. October 2nd, 2026

A proposed high-speed rail line between Quebec City and Toronto could cost billions more than the federal government’s original estimate. That’s according to a new report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer. The report estimates that the project will cost between $75 billion to $113 billion, compared with the government’s prior estimate of $60 billion to $90 billion. Among the largest cost drivers is a proposed 15-kilometre tunnel into Montreal. And factoring that tunnel between Montreal and Laval, the PBO’s calculation includes 7 stops. However, Kingston is not one of them, and they are under consideration by Alto. If they are added, we’ll have to tack on another 50 kilometres to the track, and that would drive up costs significantly. Kristy Cameron checks in with Conservative Transport Critic Dan Albas. He is the MP for Okanagan Lake West – South Kelowna. Plus, will a New Brunswick island run dry because of the Canada-USA trade war? CFRA’s Chris Holski has more on that.
