The new faces on Ottawa City Council
There will be 3 new councillors at Ottawa City Hall when the next term gets underway in mid-November. All of them are women. Erin Coffin, President of the Bridlewood Community Association, was the only candidate to take down an incumbent, as she defeated 4-term councillor Allan Hubley. Joanne Chianello, a former City Hall reporter, was elected in Kitchissippi Ward, where she replaced mayoral runner-up Jeff Leiper. Councillor-elect Chelsea Walton in Stittsville takes over for the outgoing Glen Gower, who decided not to run after serving two terms in office. All 3 women outlined their communities and current priorities on CFRA this week.
Meantime, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe spoke to CTV’s Leah Larocque post-election to discuss those same priorities, as well as the next steps at City Hall.
City Issues Panel: Ottawa’s Mayor re-elected, voter turnout reaches 23-year-low
Mark Sutcliffe was re-elected to a second term as Ottawa Mayor this week. The City Issues Panel discusses the mayoral race results, a couple of surprises around the City Council table, and the lowest voter turnout post-amalgamation. Joining Andrew Pinsent is former City Hall reporter Jon Willing and Ottawa Citizen columnist Brigitte Pellerin.
An old face returns to Ottawa politics
Mathieu Fleury served 3 terms as the city councillor for Rideau-Vanier Ward before deciding to step away in 2022 after personal reflection. The politician said divisions on City Council, and the Freedom Convoy protest that led to death threats, led to tough choices that put his family first. This week, Fleury was elected as a School Board Trustee in Zone 10, representing Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario – Ottawa’s French Public Board. He spoke to City In Review about the new role and his return to the political arena.
