Ottawa Now - Why punishing Canadian politicians for lying isn't legally practical

View descriptionShare

Should it be illegal for politicians to lie? Well, as of 2026, telling sweet little lies in Wales simply will not fly. In fact, if these new recommendations are approved by the Welsh government, politicians who are caught red-handed could lose their seats. Is that a policy we should embrace? Paul Daly, a Law Professor with the University of Ottawa, is extremely skeptical that this plan would work in any Canadian setting, as one’s right to expression is protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
