Ottawa Now - Canadian Senator aiming to restrict timing of gambling ads during live sporting events

View descriptionShare

The World Series is in full swing, and a barrage of sports gambling ads have also come out to play. Here in Ontario, the province has legalized online betting. Senator Marty Deacon, who represents the Waterloo Region, has seen enough. And while she won’t remove these ads from the TV screen, she is aiming to limit their airtimes during live sporting events. Her proposed bill would create a national strategy to regulate gambling ads that are shown during an event, or even before the game starts. For example, no sports gambling ads would air 5 minutes before the first play. The same policy would be in place 5 minutes after the game ends. It has gained a lot of steam in the Canadian Senate, but it still has to pass through multiple readings in the House of Commons. Deacon joins Kristy Cameron to deliver her sales pitch on today’s Ottawa Now.
