In recent years, multiple retailers have shuttered their Canadian department stores, ranging from Nordstrom and Sears to Peavey Mart and Zellers. Back in 2018, Sears Canada had shut down every single store across the country, officially ending a 65-year history with the Canadian market. And as consumers shift to online retailers, the department store’s relevance and profitability has taken a nosedive. Even Canada’s oldest retailer isn’t immune to this grim reality, as Hudson's Bay prepares to liquidate all of its locations. Is this the beginning of a gruesome demise for the modern-day department store? Retail expert Doug Stephens joins Kristy Cameron to explain why, in his mind, it could be unavoidable.
