Ottawa Now - An unexpected landslide result gives Cornwall a new Mayor

Ottawa has chosen its Mayor for the next 4 years, and it’s the same man who has led the previous 4 years. That, of course, would be Mark Sutcliffe. We have 3 new faces at Laurier Avenue West – and all of them are female. And with no other changes being made to the previous term, 13 of the 24 council seats will be occupied by women, marking the highest number of female councillors to sit on City Council. Of course, one of the biggest talking points today is voter turnout. In Toronto, 45.8 percent of eligible voters casted their ballots, which is a record-high. But here in Ottawa, that number was just over 36 percent, which is a record-low for our city. We delve into all angles of the 2026 Municipal Election cycle with our Reality Check Panel – featuring former Ottawa city councillors Maria McRae, Keith Egli, and Christine Leadman.

Ottawa Now - Dissecting every angle of the 2026 Municipal Election

Because he was running for Mayor of Ottawa, 12-year city councillor Jeff Leiper had to vacate his City Council seat in Kitchissippi Ward. That meant a new voice was guaranteed to represent the area for the first time since 2014. And the winner is Joanne Chianello, who had previously spent time at City Hall interviewing the councillors and reporting on the hot-button issues. Kristy Cameron speaks to the former journalist and brand-new councillor in Hour 4. Then, we preview tonight’s CTV Ottawa supper-hour newscast with Jackie Perez and Stefan Keyes. And if news breaks in real time, you’ll hear it live on CFRA’s Ottawa Now.

Hour 4 of Ottawa Now for Tues. October 27th, 2026

In a mayoral race that was neck-and-neck, voters in Toronto showed up at the ballot box, recording a record-high percentage in voter turnout. Here in Ottawa, with 14 candidates running for Mayor, it was the exact opposite. Canada’s Capital recorded its lowest voter turnout percentage since 2003 – when Bob Chiarelli secured his second and final term as Ottawa Mayor. To anyone who didn’t cast their ballot yesterday, what gave you cold feet? Kristy Cameron sifts through the CFRA textboard and tackles today’s Question of the Day. We also revisit yesterday’s pre-election predictions with CFRA’s Chris Holski. And before you ask, voter turnout was one of the listed questions. Plus, we get to know Chelsea Walton, the new voice of Stittsville Ward. She takes over for Glen Gower, who was the lone councillor from last term who didn’t seek re-election.
