Ottawa is staring down the barrel of the worst year of fatal collisions in recent memory. But what is actually causing these problems, and how can we fix them? Last hour, we chatted with Chris Hircock, the co-founder of Vision Zero Ottawa. He feels that people are discussing this issue in a detached way – mostly by throwing out numbers and stats. In doing so, that pushes us away from the humanity and the tragedy that is at the heart of these collisions. Furthermore, Hircock says the City of Ottawa needs to put their money where their mouth is, and that simply telling people to ‘drive carefully’ isn’t going to give us any form of productive solutions. However, that’s not shaping up to be the case for 2026, as Ottawa is set to enjoy a stretch of warmer-than-normal temperatures for the final days of October and the early days of November. Kristy Cameron checks in with Doug Gillham, a meteorologist with The Weather Network. Meantime, there have been 32 traffic-related deaths in Ottawa this year, cementing the deadliest on Ottawa’s roads in recent memory. Not only that, collisions resulting in life-threatening injuries have also increased by 40 percent in 2026. The big question – why is this happening? Earlier today, the Head of the E.U. said she wants Canada to become an ‘associate member’ of the European Union. She is continuing to push on this title. Members of the Bloc, such as Germany, have rejected that language and have voiced their concerns. Yet, despite that, she brought it up again today. Meantime, Carney has talked about creating a deeper relationship, but says it doesn’t matter what we call the alliance. Kristy Cameron digs deeper with Benjamin Zyla, a Professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa. Plus, an Ontario Cabinet Minister says the cost of the new Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus has increased. However, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says the City of Ottawa won’t be on the hook.
