He was born April 15, 1924 in Lithuania. His family moved to Canada when he was 3 years old. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as an Able Seaman from April 1942 until after the war ended in 1945. For his service in the Second World War, Mr. Polowin has earned the Atlantic Star; Arctic Star; 1939-45 Star; Diamond Jubilee Medal; Russian Peace Medal; Order of Ushakov and only the second Canadian to receive the French Legion of Honour Medal. He also has a street named after him in Ottawa.
