Hour 4 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. November 5th, 2026

The Carney government is arguing that tax changes, cultural supports, and billions of dollars aimed at stoking investment in today’s Federal Budget will give Canada the freedom to shape its own future. Amidst a very tense time with the United States, the Prime Minister wants Canada to be ‘masters of our own destiny’. At the top of the hour, Ottawa proposed $142.1 billion in new measures, largely offset by stronger-than-expected federal revenues. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has labeled the plan as fiscally sustainable, although the feds expect to post a deficit of $62.3 billion in this fiscal year – some $3 billion lower than April’s projections. CTV’s Josh Pringle dissects the local aspects of today’s promises in Hour 3. But first, it’s time to tackle your comments on all-things LRT, as Kristy Cameron analyzes today’s Question of the Day.

Hour 3 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. November 5th, 2026

Starting on November 22nd, OC Transpo is going to begin ‘exercising’ trains all the way to Trim Station. This includes all Line 1 trains from Tunney’s Pasture in the West End to Trim Station in the East End. Now, it comes with an asterisk, as passengers will still have to exit at Blair Station. And while this is another positive step towards Opening Day, the crucial timeline for pre-trial running remains unclear. The good news: OC Transpo General Manager Rick Leary says all the software problems from October have been resolved. He drops by for an extended visit in Hour 2. Then, we talk about the latest municipal issues with our Reality Check Panel, ranging from the upcoming phases of LRT testing to the ballooning price tag of the new Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus.

Hour 2 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. November 5th, 2026

Ottawa’s Eastern LRT Extension has been a long time coming. Someday, people will be able to ride the train all the way to Trim Station, and into Orleans. However, that day isn’t today, nor will it be tomorrow. In fact, we have an unclear timeline as to when that day will come. Later this month, on November 22nd, all Line 1 trains will do test runs from Tunney’s Pasture to Trim Station. But at the moment, there’s still no firm date for pre-trial running – the next step towards testing the service. Bob Bell, who ran in the latest Municipal Election for Orleans East-Cumberland, offers his two cents on the waiting game and the bigger picture of Ottawa’s transit system. Meantime, the Carney government is tabling the 2026 Federal Budget today – titled ‘Masters Of Our Destiny’ – in the House of Commons. The Canadian Association of Retired Persons has urged Canada’s Finance Minister to protect Old Age Security and reform mandatory Registered Retirement Income Fund withdrawal rules ahead of Thursday’s announcement. We check in with Anthony Quinn, the President of CARP, in Hour 1. But first, we bring you up to speed on today’s top headlines.
