Life as we know it was forever changed 25 years ago after a series of horrific events unfolded South of the border. A pair of hijacked airplanes barrelled into the Twin Towers, turning an iconic piece of New York City into scrap metal in a matter of minutes. Hundreds of people lost their lives on that fateful Tuesday morning in 2001. Countless families were torn apart. And in a small slice of Newfoundland, Canada became a safe haven for many terrified Americans. Today, the friendship between the two countries is a bit strained, but the tariff bad blood is being pushed aside for the next 24 hours. Where were you when life changed forever? What was going through your mind as the Twin Towers came crashing down? Kristy Cameron sifts through the CFRA textboard and tackles today’s Question of the Day. Then, we check in with CTV’s Adrian Ghobrial, who is reporting from New York City today. He spoke to a Canadian widow who was deeply impacted by 9/11, and he also reflects on Canada’s contributions in Afghanistan following those attacks.

All shows and events at Meridian Theatres have been cancelled for the rest of 2026 due to the Canada Day flooding. According to City Staff, floodwater caused ‘considerable damage’ to the Centrepointe theatre – from the main theatre stage, to the orchestra pit, to front rows of seating, and the studio theatre. Not even a grand piano was safe from this downpour. However, a ray of sunshine has popped up for Orpheus Theatre, who has performed countless plays at 101 Centrepointe Drive since the 1990’s. They were planning to launch a production of ‘Frozen’ until the July floods put them in a mad scramble to find a new venue. Thankfully, it looks like they’ve found one for the short-term. Kristy Cameron checks in with Orpheus Musical Theatre managing director J.T. Morris. Meantime, you know that an election campaign is officially building up when you start to see election signs on front lawns. Effective today, city councillor candidates and mayoral candidates are permitted to generate such support. CFRA’s Chris Holski isn’t a fan of these signs, but admits they might be a necessary evil. He explains further in Hour 2.

The horrific 9/11 attacks shattered our sense of safety and fundamentally re-engineered how Canada and its global allies track threats. Almost overnight, intelligence agencies were trying to predict the next threat before it had a chance to strike society. In the process, Canada’s Anti-Terrorism Act dismantled old legal barriers, giving agencies like CSIS and the CSE unprecedented powers to monitor digital data. We check in with Stephanie Carvin, an Associate Professor of International Relations at Carleton University and a former national security analyst. She was studying for her Masters degree when the attacks took place. Shifting gears closer to home, we’ve been hearing from a crowd of people in Centretown that the neighbourhood has been changing over the last few years, and not necessarily for the better. To be more specific, a criminal element could be taking hold. Josh Zaret is a Centretown landlord who owns a property on Argyle Avenue. He has noticed a series of incidents near his neck of the woods, ranging from trespassing to drug use. Police have been called multiple times, and it’s not invoking a sense of safety among his tenants. He sounds the alarm bells in Hour 1. But first, we bring you up to speed on today’s top headlines.
