Hour 2 of Ottawa Now for Wed. October 7th, 2026

View descriptionShare

Mayoral candidate Alex Lawson has made a Small Business Tax Cut pledge, saying he would increase a 15 percent cut introduced in 2022 by an additional 10 percent in his first budget. Lawson has also pledged to create a ‘Report Red Tape’ online portal, which would lead to quarterly reviews of top complaints and summaries of what's changed. He joins Kristy Cameron in Hour 2. Meantime, a crowd of Eastern Ontario mayors are sounding the alarm over a proposal to close a trio of local long-term care homes. At risk of closure are Pinecrest in Plantagenet, The Palace in Alexandria, and Heartwood in Cornwall. Ontario’s Ministry of Long-Term Care is currently reviewing a plan by Southbridge Care Homes to shut down the homes, and a new 320-bed facility would open in Cornwall if this vision is approved. We dig deeper with North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald.
