An American ban on $1 billion worth of Canadian imports has gone into effect. It covers several Canadian imports – ranging from alcohol, to dairy, and motorcycles. Talks between Canada and the United States remain on thin ice, and this move by U.S. President Trump is another attempt to ramp up America’s trade war. In fact, Trump thinks Canada is going to cave – and apologize – before shaking hands on a new deal with the Americans. He is confident that will happen in the coming weeks. Trump’s bravado comes on the same day that Stelco announced hundreds of layoffs – indefinitely shutting down part of its Hamilton operations and impacting up to 500 workers. Kristy Cameron checks in with Peter MacKay, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, in Hour 2. Meantime, the Ontario government and the Carney Liberals have agreed to extend the national affordable child-care program for another 4 years. However, the extension doesn’t come with any promises of lowering fees to an average of $10 per day, which is the program’s signature goal.
