Hour 2 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. May 30th, 2024

View descriptionShare

The brand-new breast cancer screening guidelines have been highly-anticipated. Today, we finally got them, but not to the extent that many of us had envisioned. The Canadian Cancer Society has been relentlessly calling on Canada’s task force to lower the age limit for routine screening, suggesting a decrease from 50 to 40. This week, the Preventive Health Care Panel ruled that it shouldn’t be lowered for average-risk citizens, arguing that it didn’t find any compelling evidence to suggest that these changes made sense. We get instant reaction from Dr. Moira Rushton, a Medical Oncologist at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Program. Meantime, the Weather Network is predicting more sunshine and warmer temperatures for Ottawa’s Summer season. This includes a heightened risk of extended heatwaves. Environment Canada’s David Phillips joins the party in Hour 2. Plus, a recent drowning has rekindled urgent warnings about the Deschenes Rapids, which is known to be one of Ottawa’s most problematic and dangerous spots.
