A new study shows that outsourcing surgeries and imaging to private for-profit clinics has not resulted in a drop in wait times for most procedures. That’s according to new data from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives – considered to be a left-leaning thinktank. It used publicly-available data, but also data obtained through access-to-information requests. Since the Ford government started outsourcing more key procedures, wait times for these medical imaging services and surgeries are actually going up. Kristy Cameron chats with Andrew Longhurst, a senior researcher and political economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. He is also the author behind this study. Meantime, an Ottawa plastic surgeon says he is starting to see more people arriving at his office with surgical plans – sketches that were made from an A.I. program. He says it doesn’t happen often, but he is taking this opportunity to warn clients that referencing images generated with A.I. in a cosmetic surgery consultation isn’t a realistic way to set expectations.
