City In Review - Can debates alter a campaign's final result?

View descriptionShare

The first of many CTV News-commissioned Nanos polls was released on Friday, and just in time ahead of Thanksgiving Weekend. The early findings from the municipal election campaign lens showcases a significant advantage for mayoral candidate Mark Sutcliffe, who is fighting for a second term in the big chair. He holds an 18 percent lead on Jeff Leiper, who currently sits in 2nd place at 31 percent. In 3rd place is Neil Saravananmutto at 12 percent, while Alex Lawson holds 7 percent of the support. The survey has a margin-of-error of plus or minus 3.6 percent, 19 times out of 20. Now, it should also be noted that 23 percent of voters haven’t made a final decision, so Wednesday’s Mayoral Debate on CTV Ottawa still holds plenty of weight. But can debates significantly impact a campaign’s final outcome, no matter how big or small the gap is? What ingredients can kickstart the perfect storm for a political comeback? Barry J. McLoughlin is the President of Transformational Leadership Consultants Inc. He joins Andrew Pinsent on today’s edition of City In Review.
