A fair warning that the contents of this conversation might be disturbing to some listeners. The family of a 12-year-old school shooting victim has launched a negligence lawsuit against OpenAI. It comes several weeks after Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia was plunged into a state of darkness, as an armed gunman opened fire at the small town’s high school. Eight people lost their lives, 27 others suffered injuries, and a portion of small-town Canada will never be the same again. In the case of Maya Gebala, she was shot 3 times, remains in B.C. Children’s Hospital with a traumatic brain injury, and is fighting for her life. Word has since spread that OpenAI was aware of the shooter’s suspicious activity on its platform, but didn’t flag it to Canadian authorities until it was too late. Andrew Pinsent chats with Florian Martin-Bariteau, an Associate Professor at UOttawa who delves into technology law, ethics, and policy.
