A campus radio station at the University of Ottawa is minutes away from hearing the Midnight chimes. CHUO 89.1 FM has faced major financial setbacks since a campus byelection discontinued the levy that helped fund their operations. In 2023, that levy accounted for nearly 80 percent of the broadcaster’s overall budget. Struggling to stay afloat in their current state, the station launched a fundraising drive a few weeks ago, setting a lofty goal of $150,000 to keep the lights on. Nearly $12,000 was raised ahead of an emergency meeting, in which the station’s Board of Directors made the tough call to pull the plug. Barring a miracle, CHUO will go radio-silent on March 31st. CHUO Station Manager Parujee Akarasewi, better known around the station as ‘Mickey’, joins Andrew Pinsent on CFRA Weekends.
