Imagine moving to Canada from a different country, all alone, at just 17 years old. Imagine reaching for the stars, studying hard, and earning a Political Science degree at Carleton University. On Thursday, as she stepped up to the podium to receive her diploma, those imaginations became reality for Afghan-born Maryam Sahar. She spent time as an interpreter with the Canadian Armed Forces and waited over an entire decade to share this academic moment with her family members. Today, she is one of many Everyday Heroes that you might see roaming around Canada’s Capital.
