Imagine moving to Canada from a different country, all alone, at just 17 years old. Imagine reaching for the stars, studying hard, and earning a Political Science degree at Carleton University. On Thursday, as she stepped up to the podium to receive her diploma, those imaginations became reality for Afghan-born Maryam Sahar. She spent time as an interpreter with the Canadian Armed Forces and waited over an entire decade to share this academic moment with her family members.
