5MM CULTURE SHIFT - TAKING VIDEOS AT CONCERTS

View descriptionShare

Concert culture has evolved, and one of the biggest debates is whether phones enhance or take away from the live music experience. These days, it's common to see concertgoers recording their favourite songs, taking pictures and sharing moments on social media. But has this changed the way we experience live music? For some, recording is part of the experience. Concert tickets can be expensive, and seeing your favourite artist live might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Capturing those moments means you can look back on them years later, share them with friends and relive the excitement. However, others argue that constantly filming can distract people from fully enjoying the performance and even affect those around them.

A 2018 UK Eventbrite survey found that 65% of respondents felt taking pictures and videos could cause them to miss out on the live experience, while 70% found it irritating when others constantly filmed.

On the other hand, some believe that recording and being present aren't mutually exclusive. You can sing, dance and enjoy the performance while capturing moments that matter to you. And for a generation that has grown up documenting and sharing experiences digitally, taking videos may simply be a natural part of enjoying a concert. It also raises the question of concert etiquette. Is there a difference between recording your favourite song and having your phone up for the entire show? And should people be able to enjoy a concert however they choose, as long as they're not disturbing anyone else?
