Do you have a lucky number, lucky item or a ritual you swear by whenever you enter a competition or need a little extra luck? And has it ever actually worked for you?
We all know someone who has a lucky number, a lucky outfit or a little ritual they swear brings them good fortune. Maybe you always choose your birthday when entering the lottery, wear the same jersey whenever your favourite team plays, or believe that certain dates are luckier than others. For years, people have associated certain numbers and objects with good luck. The number 7 is considered lucky in many cultures, while the number 13 is associated with bad luck in some Western traditions.
Even in South Africa, we have our own beliefs and superstitions that get passed down through families. But what's interesting is that even though we live in a world where we understand probability and know that winning a competition is largely down to chance, many of us still hold on to these beliefs. Some people won't enter a competition without using their lucky number, while others have a particular routine they follow whenever they need things to go their way.And with 5FM celebrating its birthday and today being the final day of our Born To Play giveaway, it got us wondering whether people still believe in luck or whether we've become more practical about these things.
