80,000 or 50,000: What is the ideal capacity for Brisbane's Olympic stadium?

View descriptionShare

There has been a lot of debate around the capacity of a potential new stadium in Brisbane for the 2032 Olympics.

Some say it should hold at least 80,000 people, while other believe a 50,000 or less seat stadium would suffice.

Former town planner Marian Wheeler told Shane Doherty on 4BC Summer Drive, "If we had an 80,000 capacity stadium, we would have the third largest cricket stadium in the world and we would have the second largest AFL venue in Australia."

"This is a very, very large stadium, which is way beyond the justification provided by the level of usage we have from patrons at the Gabba."
