While universities are ideally positioned to challenge societal status quos surrounding race, gender, nationality, and sexuality, they frequently end up replicating the very inequalities they ought to dismantle. This systemic failure is highly visible on a global scale. For instance, a recent study revealed that women make up only one-third of senior academic positions worldwide. The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) in the North West Legislature has raised sharp questions over the appointment and subsequent reappointment of Mzwandile Mkhize as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Mogwase-based Moses Kotane Local Municipality. Mkhize, who previously served as the CFO for the West Rand District Municipality in Gauteng, was first appointed to the Moses Kotane municipality in 2018 and was reappointed to the position in 2024.
