As South Africa gears up to observe workers day on the 1st of May, workers across the country continue facing escalating financial pressure due to the rising costs of housing, transportation, food and electricity. With poverty estimated at 62.7% in 2023, slightly below its pandemic peak,  its important to look at the financial strain experienced by workers amid economic challenges exacerbated by ongoing electricity shortages and a sluggish economic growth rate on this day.
