The Government of India has lifted a ban on international exports of non-basmati white rice and set a minimum export price (MEP) of 490 US dollars per tonne. The ban, which had been in place since July 20, 2023, was originally imposed to increase domestic rice availability. Huge rice shipments from India could bolster global supplies and push down prices, forcing other major exporters to lower their rates. South African retail giant Shoprite Checkers has notified the National Consumer Commission that it is recalling all Deli Hummus following a detection of Listeria Monocytogenes which is a species of foodborne bacteria. The products include Traditional Hummus, Reduced Fat Hummus and a few others. After the recall, Shoprite Checkers provided an interim investigation report to the NCC that flagged issues of product handling at the manufacturer. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Prudence Moilwa the Head of Complaints and Investigations at the National Consumer Commission.
