Novelist Wang Anyi returns to Singapore, her father's birthplace, for the City Reads festival and sits down with Zaobao's Be My Guest (《有客到》). She talks about her family's migration to Nanyang, how it inspired Sorrow of the Pacific (《伤心太平洋》), and why she admits The Song of Everlasting Sorrow (《长恨歌》) is "actually rather thin." She also discusses writing male characters, Shanghai versus Singapore, and why literature can't be replaced by AI. Listen to the full interview.
