January 1st arrives with such momentum. The resolutions, the goals, the genuine desire to make this year different. And then, somewhere around the second or third week, the list quietly gets set aside. By the midpoint of the year, many of us have already decided to wait until January again before trying anything new.
But here we are, more than halfway through. And the rest of the year still belongs to God.
Trusting Him with it does not require having a revised plan or a fresh burst of motivation. It requires something simpler and harder at the same time. Open hands. The willingness to lay down our grip on how we think the remaining months should go, and receive instead what He has for us in them.
Even in a season of answered prayers and long-awaited dreams finally arriving, the need for God does not diminish. A book contract. A seminary acceptance. Travel to places only dreamed of. And underneath all of it, the same realization that the God who was needed in the years of waiting is just as needed in the years of receiving. Perhaps even more, because abundance carries its own temptations toward self-sufficiency that scarcity never does.
Isaiah 12:2 is a declaration made from a place of genuine trust, not wishful thinking. Surely God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord Himself is my strength and my defense. That surely is not naive. It is a choice, made in full awareness of uncertainty and change, to anchor identity and confidence in who God is rather than in how things are going.
The God who died for us can certainly be trusted with the rest of this year. Even the parts we cannot see. Even the changes we would rather avoid. Even the months we are approaching with open hands when we would much rather be holding on tight.
He is our strength. He is our defense. And that is enough to move forward without fear.
Ponder Tonight
Trusting God looks like open hands rather than white-knuckled fists, which is a simple image and a genuinely difficult practice. It means releasing outcomes we care deeply about into the care of Someone whose wisdom exceeds our own.
The tendency to wait for a new year before making meaningful changes is a way of postponing the faithfulness God is inviting us into right now, in this month, with whatever remains of this year.
Even in seasons of obvious blessing and fulfilled dreams, our need for God does not decrease. Abundance can quietly breed self-sufficiency in ways that are harder to detect than the neediness that comes with difficulty.
Isaiah's declaration was not made from a place of certainty about outcomes. It was made from a place of certainty about God's character, which is always the more reliable foundation for trust.
Tonight's Scripture
"Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation." — Isaiah 12:2, NIV
Your Evening Prayer
Father,
Learning to trust You with the rest of this year is not always easy. We fear change. We fear the unknown of what the next month will bring. But tonight we surrender it all to You. Every step, every breath, every decision and outcome belongs to You.
As we open our hands, please provide Your peace. Remind us that though we may not know the next step, You do. Our part is simply obedience. The outcome is Yours. Help us live in that distinction without fear, trusting the God who has proven Himself faithful in every season that has already passed.
We praise, thank, and love You, Jesus.
Amen.
